The shocked driver took one look at Justin, who was wearing a bloody shirt, and immediately dialed emergency service On the 911 tape, the motorist can be heard telling the operator: "I think somebody's been shot. He's conscious, trying to keep him that way. It's a gunshot or stab, I can't actually tell." In fact, Justin himself had been shot four times - in his hand, chest and shoulder. He had driven from the beach to get help after, he told police, he and his wife April had been attacked by a robber at gunpoint. He revealed the couple had been walking along the beach when the robber had confronted them. Justin said he struggled with the man and the gun went off, hitting April in the head before the robber turned the gun on him. He said he lost consciousness but when he came to, April was face down in the water. He tried to drag her across the beach but after 100 yards, he was in so much pain from his own gunshot wounds, he couldn't take her any further. So he left her body on the boardwalk and managed to get to the top of the stairs himself and in the car. After hearing his story paramedics raced to the beach but found they were too late. April's body was still on the boardwalk but she had died from the single gunshot to her head. Initially Justin was too distraught to provide a description of their attacker. By the time he finally did, police had their own suspicions and suspect Ð Justin. And the forensic evidence in the case soon backed up their theories. Justin was charged with AprilÕs murder Ð and a jury found him guilty of murder. The jury recommended he get the death penalty but the judge stepped in and gave him life in prison without parole.
