CHINA TIANANMEN

A Chinese policeman leads away a woman who was protesting on a sidewalk beside Beijing's Tiananmen Square Satuday May 29, 2004. The woman claimed her son was severely disabled in a beating by police, and authorities failed to fully investigate the case. Political dissidents have been put under virtual house arrest and the square is being closely watched in the buildup to the 15th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 massacre of democracy protesters. Chinese authorities are trying to prevent any public commemorations of the massacre, which left hundreds, possibly thousands, dead, as Chinese soldiers shot their way through city streets to end weeks of pro-democracy protests in the square.
