ALFRED HINDS

1964-07-20 Victory for Alfred Hines - after 11 years in jail Master jailbreaker Alfred George Hinds has made the big break-through in the fight to clear his name . Yesterday he was awarded £1,300 libel damages against the man who arrested him for a London store robbery nearly 11 years ago. And the jury who decided in Hind's favour said , in effect , that he did not take part in the £38,000 raid on Maples , the West End furniture store - although Hinds has nearly completed a 12 year sentence for his alleged part in it . Now 47-year-old Hinds , the man with three daring jail escapes behind him , will ask the Home Secretary to refer his conviction to the Court of Criminal Appeal forr eview . Hinds ' High Court libel action against former Detective Cheif Superintendent Herbert Sparks , " Iron Man " of Scotland Yard , had lasted 26 days . Mr Sparks is faced with costs which may be as high at £15,000 . He is appealing against the decision.
